HIP lodges patent application on Chemconsult® patient medication counselling system

Health Corp, parent company of HIP, announced on 3rd June that the HIP franchise had lodged an application for a worldwide patent on Chemconsult®, its patient medication counselling system.

As we have reported many times before in HIP UPdate, the system which lies at the core of the Chemconsult® process is based on how pharmacists interact with their customers to identify a wide range of issues in relation to their health and medication. The Chemconsult® process has been credited with identifying significant medication issues such as inappropriate dosage, conflicts between medications and non-compliance to medication regimes. This is achieved via electronic database matching comparing medication data, patient data and the prescribed medication. An outcome of this process is the collection of considerable, unique statistical data relating to medication usage.

The benefits to the public, drug companies and those involved in the healthcare payment system are substantial. The Chemconsult® process aims to reduce medication problems, whilst increasing compliance to medication treatment regimes. The overall benefit is reduced hospitalisations and death due to medication problems, increased sales for drug companies who participate and reduced healthcare costs to the government and private health insurers.

Health Corporation is now in a position to supply, for the first time, accurate, prompt feedback on medication use, compliance, sensitivities and possible interactions, as well as comparative commercial data. All information is desensitised and free of privacy considerations. Negotiations are underway with certain manufacturers and distributors of prescription pharmaceuticals for access to this valuable data.

Ken Lee, CEO of Health Corporation said,

"We are very excited about this initiative as we can now commence negotiations with certain manufacturers and distributors of prescription pharmaceuticals on the supply side. For the first time, a pharmacist will have the potential to be recognised and paid for the valuable work he or she does in advising on medication issues to help reduce medication problems and provide health outcomes."
