Mirixa and Chemconsult® - what’s the difference?
With the Pharmacy Guild’s launch of Mirixa across the country over the past few months, you could be forgiven for being a little confused as to where Mirixa fits - in relation not only to Chemconsult®, but also to the twenty or so other medicines adherence programs on the market in Australia.
Mirixa - in conjunction with a medicines database called MedsIndex - is essentially designed to help monitor correct use of medicines, primarily for patients with chronic diseases. The system checks the intervals between script refills against the doctor’s instructions to identify poor medication compliance.
Chemconsult® on the other hand is primarily for patients starting a new drug, a checking system to make sure that all possible medicine interactions and errors have been flagged at the time of initial prescription. If medication is changed then a new Chemconsult® consultation is necessary, but it is not a medicine adherence/compliance program like Mirixa.
HIP CEO and founder Ken Lee, who originally developed the Chemconsult® program in his Castle Hill pharmacy, explains
“Chemconsult® is a check across all medications, including a check of medication information and the prescription itself when patients start a new drug, unlike Mirixa, which is based on an individual’s medication compliance. Chemconsult® is a reasonably quick check and so is probably quicker to implement in a pharmacy than Mirixa. Since they do completely different jobs, Mirixa and Chemconsult® are complementary and should work very well together in the same pharmacy."
